August 31, 2007

Update: Apple and NBC Universal confirmed Friday that NBC shows will not be sold on iTunes.
In a statement, Apple didn’t mince words:

The move follows NBC’s decision to not renew its agreement with iTunes after Apple declined to pay more than double the wholesale price for each NBC TV episode, which would have resulted in the […]

August 31, 2007

I’m constantly amazed at the places Glenn Fleishman’s excellent articles turn up. That latest, on the problems municipal wi-fi networks are facing is in The Economist (the only newsweekly worth reading anymore). I originally met Glenn when he interviewed me years ago for a article on Warchalking, of all things, for the NY […]

Dell: What happens when component cost rise?

August 31, 2007

Dell’s most recent quarter benefited from falling component costs. The rub: It isn’t passing those benefits on to you.
A few months ago, Apple got a huge bump on cheap component prices. It pocketed most of the gain. And it can because it’s a premium brand.
Dell, however, may be a different story. For the […]

Will Next iPhone Support GPRS?

August 31, 2007

Apple is hard at work making the next version of the iPhone worth every penny of its subsidized $499 price tag. The next iPhone probably due out at Macworld or early spring of ‘08 will incorporate a GPS receiver chip closely matching the SiRFstarIII from SiRF Technology. Even though the StarIII’s power consumption is a bit higher than Apple would like it is considered the best chip for a mobile device of this kind, having the capability to receive signals from 20 different satellites simultaneously and a super fast First Fix Time.

Because of the high expectations placed upon the iPhone, Apple is certain to use a chipset using Assisted GPS technology, which cuts down the time needed to determine a location using GPS. (A-GPS) is necessary in urban areas with tall buildings or locations with heavy tree cover.

The first phone/GPS devise to fully utilize this technology is CNS-4320 from DiXCOM. The CNS-4320 hybrid device uses GSM radio with GPRS data for text and multimedia messaging. DiXCOM has also equipped the CNS with the Traffic Message Channel (TMC) for real time traffic information, a technology Apple is thought to be developing.

Access your entire iTunes library remotely with your iPhone + DOT.TUNES

August 31, 2007

I’ve been trolling the internet looking for another iphone application that lets you access your entire iTunes library from your iPhone, but there’s nothing.

dottunes
DOT.TUNES is the ONLY application that gives you the ability to stream music (iphone ringtones ), videos (iphone videos) and movies directly from your iPhone.

The whole team has been rocking DOT.TUNES on their iPhones and we’re spreading the word.

I’m not trying to brag, but DOT.TUNES is the truth. Its the sexiest application out for the iPhone right now, and I challenge anyone to prove otherwise.

But don’t take my word for it, download the application, get the iPhone plug-in and try it out for yourself.

iPhoneSimFree to release iPhone unlocking software in 48 hours

August 31, 2007

iPhone hacks - Image 1Looks like the iPhoneSimFree group, who claimed to have hacked the iPhone a week ago, isn’t hampered by the same legal dilemma as UniquePhones. The company has developed a software-only unlocker for the iPhone which they will be releasing within the next 48 hours.

To satisfy doubters, iPhoneSimFree is also holding a contest where three winners can have their iPhones unlocked for free. No definite price has been announced yet but they will be offering as many payment options as possible. They are confident that it will do its job but they don’t offer a money back guarantee if Apple chooses to lock the device again in the future.

They claim that the only difference between pre- and post-unlocking the iPhone would be the Visual Voice Mail which is an exclusive feature of AT&T. Whether or not AT&T will be able to delay or entirely halt the operation before its release like it did for UniquePhone’s unlocking software is still in question. Most likely we’ll hear about it within the next 48 hours.

It’s damned if you do, damned if you don’t

August 31, 2007

August 31, 2007

Novell’s partnership with Microsoft to resell SUSE has drawn fire from many quarters, but in the end the deal appears to have delivered the desired effect: Jump start Novell as a Linux player.
