Microsoft’s announcement that it is preparing a Vista Service Pack 1 beta in two weeks is curious on many levels. Although Microsoft delivers improvements via service packs I can’t help but consider Vista SP1 a do-over.
When the SP1 lands in the first quarter of 2008 are we really getting what Vista should have been at […]

Scientists at the University of Nagoya have developed software that tracks your driving style. It knows how hard you press the accelerator/brake; your distance from other vehicles; and how violently you turn the steering wheel. Its ostensible purpose is to give you feedback that will make you a better driver.
So What?
Ha! That’s not its purpose, […]

The latest version for the NES emulator for the iPhone has been released addressing some bugs and adding some new features. The NES app from developer nervegas allows NES games to be played on the iPhone.
This version (0.99.07) fixed a rare bug that causes the controller to freeze. This was addressed as stated in section v0.99.06, and the fix caused incompatibility with save games from previous builds. Review the changelog for v0.99.07 and v0.99.06 for other changes in the latest update:
0.99.06 [nervegas]
- Fixed rare controller-getting-stuck bug
- NOTE: 0.99.06 is built with the new toolchain, and is not compatible with previous versions’ save games.
0.99.07 [nervegas]
- Added alert with instructions when no ROMs are detected
- Added alert for invalid game genie codes; don’t save
- Fixed alert sheet presentation / removed gap from bottom
- Added sound manager for sound without killing mediaserverd
As always, users are urged to go over the readme file before using the app. Start whipping Mario’s raccoon tail and download the emulator below:

Given the attention Apple’s iPhone has been getting from the hacking community, we were wondering when somebody would try tricking out the unit’s accelerometer. For the guys unfamiliar with this particular function, it allows the iPhone to detect its orientation, which in turn allows it to adjust its screen display accordingly.
And from the looks of this video we’ve picked up (posted by ealf), it’s also become a new source of entertainment and (quite possibly) new homebrew implication - see the segment that demonstrates a tilt-based game in motion. The poster further states that this hack’s source code will be available soon. For the moment, we advise readers to enjoy this teaser video, and keep alert in case this hack gives way to new uses for this mobile.

When I was Utah’s CIO, we were preparing for the Salt Lake City Olympics. One of the IT related issues was protecting State of Utah network assets from attacks by people who might want to use the publicity of the games to make a political or social statement. We definitely noticed a increase […]

CIO Insight polled some CIOs on what Web 2.0 applications they use personally. Given the results, you would expect that the IT executives would be open to adopting Web 2.0 applications for their businesses. About 50 percent of the group watch videos and use wikis, blogs and RSS, and a third use social networking of […]

The fate of the human species depends on AI (Aritificial Intelligence) entities far smarter than us and who aren’t prone to wipe out or enslave us. That is one of the topics to be discussed by luminaries in the AI world at the Singularity Summit 2007 held at the Palace of Fine Arts in San […]

In the yet-another-Google-phone-rumor department, Rediff.com is reporting that Google is just “a fortnight away” from launching its Google Phone.
According to Rediff Google is in talks with service providers in India for an exclusive launch. The Gphone will launch simultaneously in the U.S. and Europe.
Color me skeptical on this one kids–apparently I’m not alone. […]

This week on the Dan & David Show we discuss Sun’s transformation on Wall Street. The stock price hasn’t risen above $5 but the stock symbol changed from SUNW to JAVA. I can understand why salesforce.com took CRM as its ticker symbol, but it’s not clear what behind Sun’s move, other than trying to replace […]

I met with Denis Browne, senior vice president of imagineering at SAP Labs. He isn’t on loan from Disney, which came up with “imagineering” portmanteau in the 1950’s. Browne is tasked with imagining, developing and evangelizing Web 2.0 innovations–social networks, widgets, RSS, blogs, wikis, SMS, virtual worlds, etc.–across various SAP’s various product divisions and […]

Sun Microsystems said Thursday that it’s changing its ticker from “SUNW” to “JAVA” effective Aug. 27.
While this move is largely a gimmick–Is any institutional investor going to push Sun over $5 over a ticker?–the new ticker is an interesting message. The message: Sun is more than storage systems, servers and UNIX–in other words all […]

Deutsche Bank reports that Palm is delaying the Foleo companion device, which was supposed to hit stores this week. The big question: Does anyone (outside of the three of you that are going to buy one) care?
One issue: The Foleo had trouble working with Palm’s Treo. Go figure. Sounds like a good reason to delay […]
