Dell’s consumer PC disaster

October 31, 2007

Dell has climbed out of accounting purgatory, officially restated more than four years of financial results and put an ugly chapter behind the company. But none of those moves fix a reeling consumer business.
First the details: Dell filed its restated results with the Securities and Exchange Commission for fiscal years 2003 through 2006 and the […]

Do-not-track list: Has a Web cookie ever interrupted your dinner?

October 31, 2007

Privacy advocacy groups are expected to propose a Do-Not-Track list that would do look to thwart the use of Web cookies–and behavioral ad targeting.

Citizen special edition black iPhone

October 31, 2007

citizen iphone

When I first saw this story, I thought Citizen, the same company that made my watch, had made a special edition iPhone which didn’t make much sense. There is a reason why that didn’t make much sense, its because they didn’t make it, Citizen: Citizen made it, which is a whole other company entirely.

I took a look at the Citizen: Citizen website and saw some of the stuff they were selling, lets suffice it to say that the store isn’t for the middle or lower classes, but they do have some pretty cool looking products, and they are very edgy with some of their products. Now that things were starting to make more sense, they show a $2000 price tag to purchase one of the all black ccPhones.

Other than an all black iPhone, it appears the dock has also been blacked out, and they have added some artwork for the screen, a ton of information, some videos, some music, and Citizen: Citizen’s very own address book in v-cards, that last one will be updated a couple times a year too. No service is included, so you’ll have to get it activated by one of the Apple approved service providers. They are just 8GB iPhones, and are on pre-order now from their site for $2k each, they are set to ship on the 15th.

View Docs, Spreadsheets & Presentations on your iPhone

 docs for iphone

Google Docs Blog had announced couple of weeks back about Google Docs for mobile phones especially the iPhone, it means that you will now be able to view your docs, spreadsheets and presentations that are optimized for the iPhone.

However, the current optimized iPhone edition is only available in read-only, allowing you to view your documents, but not to edit them.

You can access the docs using the regular link; but you will soon notice that it is rather difficult to use as the UI is cramped up and this is even before the keyboard is activated.

To check out the read-only version of Google docs, point your iPhone’s Safari browser to http://docs.google.com/m.

If you are not happy with the option of only being able to view Microsoft Word documents with your iPhone and would like to edit them as well then you can check out Glide Write 2.0 iPhone version which brings powerful mobile document creation and collaboration features to your iPhone which I had reviewed in September.

These are still early days and I am sure we will soon we able to edit Google Docs from the iPhone. Google seems to be making all the right moves with regards to apps for the iPhone as I think they realize the potential of the jesus phone. They have now launched a slew of products optimized for the iPhone starting with the killer iPhone Apps like Google Maps, YouTube and others like Google Calendar, Gmail and now Google Docs.

Will Google be to iPhone/mobile phones, what Microsoft has been to PCs

How the iPhone changed Verizon Wireless

Verizon Wireless is reportedly talking to Google about using its upcoming mobile operating system. It has unveiled a bevy of phones for the holiday season and generally seems more hip overall–at least for Verizon. So why the change?
Two words: Apple’s iPhone.
There is no way Verizon, which arguably has the best network but a lackluster phone […]

Why the titans of tech should start playing ball

October 31, 2007

Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk yearns for the application of tech entrepreneurship to moribund sports franchises, following in the fancy footsteps of Mark Cuban. After all, sports is a social network of extraordinary proportions…
“I’d run any company; it’s completely irrelevant to me. It’s really about this drive to win.”
These are the words not of former junk […]

Cracked iPhone: the spraypaint mod

October 31, 2007

The Black iPhone - Image 1 You can’t put a price on individuality and sometimes people go to lengths to say “I’m different.” Well when Mark Hoekstra of GEEKtechnique decided to paint his iPhone black, that’s what he was going for. He wanted to say “this is my iPhone.” Plus there was a crack he had to cover up.

So a friend’s iPod cracks and it lands on Hoekstra’s lap, but now it has this ugly crack near the home button. What does he do? He takes an old Apple keyboard, pries out the old Apple logo (the rainbow-colored one) and cuts out some plastic. He then molds the plastic to fit over the bottom of the iPod to cover up the crack.

After all that trouble of modeling the plastic he decides to go a step further and disassembles the whole device to spraypaint the external casing black. When he puts the whole thing together he wound up with a pretty sleek iPhone that, in it’s own respect, is better-looking than the original with a touch of old-school charm.

Visit the site through the Read link below to see the steps he took to mod his iPhone with his own personal touch.
