Leaked iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 video confirmed true, stops jailbreaks

December 30, 2007

A video of the iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 was recently leaked into the internet. While some may dismiss this as a hoax, website Gizmodo and other members of the community have confirmed that this video is indeed legitimate.

Natetrue, the creator of the iBrickr iPhone app, spoke about this saying that “if it is a hoax, they did a buttload of work.” He pointed out that the program used the Apple encryption key to install the update, something that hasn’t been obtained by the rest of the iPhone hacking community yet:

It installs on the phone no-questions-asked and for that you need to have Apple’s private key, which i can confirm that the iPhone hacker community does not have - as much as we would love to have it.

Much like the previous firmware update, this relocks any iPhone. However, it prevents future unlocks using AnySim and also patches some of the vulnerabilities that 3rd party hackers have been using to run applications.

Theoretically speaking though, other solutions to such as iPhone Sim Free and hardware solutions such as TurboSim should still work just fine. However, the act of jailbreaking and activating units is still impossible as of this article’s writing.

Before we go, we’re pretty sure that you want to know what new features that iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 has. So here are the different functions that have been confirmed:

  • The ability to send an SMS message to multiple people is now there
  • Google Maps application can now pinpoint your location using cell tower triangulation
  • Google Maps can now display the Hybrid map view
  • You can now drag and drop application icons on your home screen
  • The home screen supports pagination
  • You can now add web bookmarks to your home screen

That said here’s the video of the firmware in action. Enjoy.

Send SMS from iPhone to multiple recipients

December 29, 2007

One of the most commonly requested features not available by default on the iPhone is the ability to send text messages (SMS) to multiple recipients. Thanks to a new third-party native application created by Shawn Chain, you can now do just that. Dubbed iSMS, the new application also allows you to view messages by category (Inbox, Sent, Draft) and search text messages directly on the iPhone.

Here’s how to use this beefed-up SMS application:

  • aunch iSMS, and all of your backlogged text messages will be organized and accessible by the application. Tap the “Message” button in the lower-left portion of the screen to access them.
  • To create a message, tap the icon that looks like a pencil writing on a notepad in the upper-right corner (the same icon that’s used to create new mail messages in the iPhone’s Mail application).
  • To send a message to multiple recipients, tap the new message icon, then tap the + button to add a recipient from your contact list. Tap the + button again to add another recipient, and so forth.
  • The search function works exactly as you’d expect: Tap the Search button, enter a term, and press “Search.” A list of items containing the term will appear, with the date of sending/receipt indicated.

iSMS iSMS boasts some other great capabilities not included in Apple’s iPhone SMS application:

  • forward SMS messages by tapping an individual message, then tapping the forward button (an arrow icon — the same used to forward in the iPhone’s Mail app).
  • call the sender or receiver of a particular text message directly by tapping the “call” button while viewing an individual message.
  • access a list of predefined messages by tapping the “Template” button.
  • Insert smileys via icons by tapping the “Smiley” button.

Apple patent: iPhone to order from Starbucks?

December 28, 2007

Apple patents way to order from Starbucks on your iPhone - Image 1

Something’s brewing for your iPhone, and you can get it in decaf. According to a patent filed by Apple, your iPhone may soon become a way for you to skip all the hassle of falling in line to order your favorite cup of coffee in Starbucks.

The patent describes a way for you to use a device - an iPhone is likely for this task - to bypass an “annoying wait in the queue” and not knowing when your order’s ready, which sometimes results in “tepid” coffee.

Essentially you’ll get to order your drink with the device and when the drink is ready, the device will also let you know if the order’s been prepared so you can pick it up as soon as it’s up on the counter. The system will also allow computers in stores to record their customers’ favorite orders.
