It was recently announced that consumers will be able to access Encyclopaedia Britannica through their iPhones. This means that as long as you have your iPhone, you will no longer be caught unaware and can look up pertinent facts about almost any subject quickly and efficiently.
The iPhone-optimized site offers full-text searching, thousands of high-resolution thumbnails that expand to full-size images, and page layouts optimized for cell phone bandwidth. The entire database is said to be fully searchable and hot-linked in a method similar to Encyclopaedia Britannica’s Web editions.

Remember the cool iBand video we picked earlier that featured two iPhones jamming with a DS? We’re letting you know that we’ve identified the one of the other applications that was used in that clip: Drummer by developer MooTheCow.
As the homebrew’s name implies, running it turns your iPhone into a veritable mobile drum set. MooTheCow notes that Drummer currently carries these features:
- A 15 sample Drum Pad for your iPhone / iPod Touch.
- Multi-touch. Up to 5 pads can be pressed at once.
- Animated pads illuminate at your touch.
- Play along to all your MP3s.
- Change between drumkits at the touch of a button.
- The following kits come pre-installed: Rock, Dance, Jazz 1 and 2, and Electro.
- Drumkits are fully expandable to allow you to add your own samples (see below).
The app is currently in the Beta phase, so anybody out there hoping to grab their a copy for their own jam sessions will have to wait. That said, we’ve picked up a video of Drummer in a solo act, to give you a better idea of how it handles. Drop by again in case we receive word of a public release. You may also want to visit MooTheCow’s site via the source link for additional details.

Software as a service is about to approach a crossroads in a few years and at issue is whether it becomes a dominant business model or a feature that becomes just another way for a vendor to deliver an application.
To Salesforce.com and NetSuite SaaS is clearly the dominant business model–or at least will be in […]

Matthias Huber wrote in to tell us about his new iChinese system that helps you learn your characters. iChinese uses the iPhone’s touch-based interface to teach users how to write the characters on-screen.
It’s available by adding the http://ichinese.de/repo repository to Installer.app. I don’t speak Chinese. I don’t write chinese (although I’m very fond of chinese food). I wouldn’t know an ideogram if I tripped on one, so if you give this a try and have an informed view on how useful it is, let us know in the comments.

Web designers and enthusiasts are likely already familiar with Dave Shea, the Canadian web designer behind the css Zen Garden and other standards-based web projects. If you’re not familiar with him from that angle, you may recognize his Chalkwork series of icons which has just had a set of iPhone & iPod touch icons added to it.
While most of his work comes with a well-deserved price tag, this set is available free of charge. It contains 29 well-designed icons, including the default applications and some select third-party apps. The download includes a selection of Dock and Wallpaper images as well. You’ll need a jailbroken iPhone/touch to use them and the set comes with instructions for manual and SummerBoard installations.

Life is just so tightly scripted for the technology bigwigs. Google CEO Eric Schmidt sat down with News.com and wouldn’t stray far from the Google Health script. Granted, Schmidt was talking at the HIMSS health conference, but give us a little something.
Sure, Schmidt’s Google Health thing is interesting, but not THAT interesting.
The takeaway: CEO interviews […]
