While Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch have an impressive library of multimedia assets to offer via iTunes, the inability to play your own selection of media files without proper workarounds can still be an unwanted inconvenience at times. Fortunately, Orb Networks officially announced its recently released its new OrbLive iPhone application will change all of this.
The new downloadable application will allow users to enjoy video content in any format - downloaded BitTorrent files, TiVo-to-Go files, DivX, Mov, MP4, even live video and TV streams. OrbLive, along with the free Orb Media Center app on your PC, will give everyone access to all the media from that PC even while you’re away.
Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks, had a couple of choice words to compare the new application with Apple’s old way of sharing media files. Here’s what he had to say:
Face it, sync-ing was a good way to get your media 5 or 10 years ago. Now it is just a way for Apple to control - and make money on - things you watch and listen to. NBC makes their shows available for free on their website, and TiVo says it is OK to watch your recordings on your computer; why does Steve Jobs get to decide what you watch? Before you know it, Apple is going to be like that soup guy on Seinfeld. ‘No Tivo for you!’
The OrbLive iPhone application can be downloaded through the link found on the source link we’ve provided below. Just remember that this program will only work on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches. You can also view a video featuring OrbLive in one of our previous articles.

It’s no small surprise that developer BigBoss once again announced a new update to the Apple iPhone homebrew app, Touchpad Pro. The latest build, version 4.30, extends this useful app’s mileage by improving its resolution support several fold.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Touchpad Pro, it’s basically an application which allows you to use your iPhone’s or iPod Touch’s touchscreen capabilities as a remote control for your Mac. You can also check out the previous version to this interesting app by clicking on this link.
The developer mentioned that Touchpad Pro v4.30 now supports resolutions of up to 1440 x 900, as well as other non-standard resolutions. The program can be downloaded via the different repositories listed on the source link below.

Comcast’s portal had its DNS records hi-jacked in an attack. The big question: Was Comcast just a big target or was this a BitTorrent revenge attack as some folks have speculated?
If you recall, Comcast had drawn some fire over traffic shaping on its network and curtailing peer-to-peer services. It’s pretty easy to connect this hack […]

Of that attack […]

The iPhone ante is being raised by the minute for Apple. The question now shifts from whether Apple will ship 10 million iPhones by the end of 2008 to by how much it’ll blow away its own target.
To wit:
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, one of the more bullish iPhone fans out there, is predicting 12.9 […]

Something interesting is hiding in 10.5.3. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what it does. But if it’s necessary to upgrade if you want to use the new SDK release, that means that there’s a something that ties 10.5.3 to new iPhone features.
So intrepid TUAW readers-slash-detectives, what can you find lurking in that new 10.5.3 firmware release that provides new and exciting iPhone functionality? Let us know in the comments. My completely wild pulling-it-from-the-posterior guess is something to do with AppStore support — or maybe the iNewton — or maybe “back to my iPhone” support — or… No really, I have no clue. Hopefully Uncle Steve will give us something nice for Keynotemas. Until then, see if you can figure it out.

Mozilla on Wednesday said that it is aiming to set a Guinness World Record for software downloads in 24 hours with Firefox 3. The date for this download extravaganza is sometime this month.

Google Gears launched a year ago and the search giant is ditching its moniker to reinforce that Gears is an open source project. So far so good, MySpace has used Gears to launch search and sort mail messages. The overall theme: Google is trying to extend the browser.
