Cracked iPhone: the spraypaint mod

October 31, 2007

The Black iPhone - Image 1 You can’t put a price on individuality and sometimes people go to lengths to say “I’m different.” Well when Mark Hoekstra of GEEKtechnique decided to paint his iPhone black, that’s what he was going for. He wanted to say “this is my iPhone.” Plus there was a crack he had to cover up.

So a friend’s iPod cracks and it lands on Hoekstra’s lap, but now it has this ugly crack near the home button. What does he do? He takes an old Apple keyboard, pries out the old Apple logo (the rainbow-colored one) and cuts out some plastic. He then molds the plastic to fit over the bottom of the iPod to cover up the crack.

After all that trouble of modeling the plastic he decides to go a step further and disassembles the whole device to spraypaint the external casing black. When he puts the whole thing together he wound up with a pretty sleek iPhone that, in it’s own respect, is better-looking than the original with a touch of old-school charm.
